Issuing parts for repair & replacement is common practices. Certain parts has to be on hand for smooth day to day running of petrochemicals & refineries. As parts retrieval can happen anytime throughout the day its really cumbersome having to buy parts every time you need them. Having said that we don’t just keep spare for everything as it will be expensive and counterproductive things to do. Understanding parts requirements and patterns are prudent. Parts sitting idle for years are really not good. It takes your storage space and may get dilapidated. Inventory management is one area to keep our eyes on as parts in warehouse cost money. Methods used in inventory management are First In First Out (FIFO) & Last In First Out (LIFO). They also have First In Still Here (FISH). Interestingly, these acronyms are applicable when it comes to employers firing employees.
For safe & reliable operations of centrifugal pump it is necessary to keep certain spares. A case in point is mechanical seal, the centerpiece of stuffing box design. Its a precision piece of equipment that need adequate storage to ensure its performance. Adverse storage conditions can damage mechanical seal and we do not want to issue out impaired mechanical seal to be used in operations. As mechanical seal is not cheap we are better off to follow proper storage guidelines and safe keeping practices.
A shaft may not be as delicate as mechanical seal. However, it does need some attention for storage in warehouse. Bent shaft causes many problems and leaking seal is one of them. A shaft sitting in horizontal position over long period of time may get sagged especially for slender shafts. To keep shafts in vertical position in warehouse is a good practice to eliminate the potential of shaft sagging. To do this, you need a racking system where shafts can be vertically stored and safely retrieved when you need them.
Storage is behind the scene practices that can influence pump performance and reliability. Parts sitting in warehouse for months or years awaiting for next installation may get deteriorated. Taking care of these parts are key to centrifugal pump reliability. Obviously, nobody wants to use defective parts to commission centrifugal pump.
